Sales of homes to foreigners who do not live in Spain rose again in 2021. The purchase of homes by extranjeros no residents increased by 51.2% compared to 2020, representing 43,827 homes sold, according to figures from the Ministry of Transportes, Movilidad y Agenda Urbana. Home sales rose in particular in the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, but the provinces of Alicante and Málaga remain the provinces where foreigners buy the most homes.
While foreigners who are not officially resident in Spain bought a total of 43,827 homes in 2021, an increase of 51.2%, the number of foreigners who are officially resident in Spain also increased by 38.8% to 59,168 homes sold. In total, 102,995 were bought by foreigners in Spain in 2021.
In the first corona year 2020, home sales to foreigners still fell by -30.2% in the case of ‘no residents’ and -22.1% in the case of ‘residents’. Compared to the pre-Covid year 2019, sales in 2021 increased by +5.6% for foreigners not living in Spain and +8% for foreigners living in Spain.
If you look at the map of Spain on THIS website you will see that 13,301 homes were sold in the provinces of Alicante to foreigners who do not officially live in Spain, while these were 9,600 homes in the province of Málaga, 4,692 in the Balearic Islands, 2,497 in the Region of Murcia, 2,400 in the province of Girona, 2,328 in the Canary Islands, 1,106 in the province of Valencia, 1,036 in the province of Almería, 932 in the province of Barcelona, 698 in the province of Tarragona and 541 in the province of Granada.
